Advocating Self-Care and Mental Health with Latoya

“Self-care is not selfish. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” – Eleanor Brownn

What do you do & what inspires you to do it:

I am an aspiring plus-size model and body positive influencer. It’s important and inspiring for me to inspire other people to love themselves the way they are and the way they want to express themselves. I think it’s important to do things for yourself and self-care and mental health are something I feel really passionate about.

How do you define success:

Success to me is not defined by money, power or popularity but by working towards what I love every day and consistently trying to be a better person than I was the day before and only competing with myself. Success is contentedness; success is an overall happy feeling about life.

What would you say to motivate a younger you to be successful in life:

If I could give my younger self advice, I would tell myself to not be afraid to try and excel in things that people might not see you doing in their eyes. I did a lot of people pleasing in my younger years, always picking the school path or career path that I was supposed to follow in my parents’ eyes but never for me. I would say stop focusing on everyone else’s ideas and perceptions about myself and just do what makes you happy.

Are you doing now what you’ve always wanted to do or did you have other aspirations previously:

When I was younger, I would watch America’s Next Top Model and I was really inspired by the photography and the art that was created during the show. I always wanted to be a model but never felt like I was the right size or fit. Well now I am modeling, and it might not be as high-end modeling as ANTM, but I never imagined I would have the opportunities that I have been given so far. I’m also still working towards my passion for mental health. I went to school for Psychology, but right now I’m just having fun creating art and content.

What’s the best business or personal advice you’ve ever received:

The best personal advice I have ever received is to just be myself, as cliché as it may sound it’s much easier to be yourself than to keep up a façade of something you’re not. Mental health is so important, deep breaths are like love letters to your soul and at the end of the day, if there’s nothing left you have your inner peace so it’s imperative to develop a healthy relationship with yourself.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you:

I think people would be surprised to know that I have my Bachelor’s in Psychology.

Do you believe in a higher power:

I do believe in a higher power, but throughout my entire life I have challenged the perceptions of a higher power that family and society has pushed on me. I believe that God, spirituality, religion, etc., is something sacred and personal and that the relationship is between an individual and the higher power that they believe in. I don’t think that it is right to paint a picture of how one should relate to their higher power, I think everyone’s relationship with their God is different and that should be OK.

What’s something you can’t live without:

Something I can’t live without would definitely be my hair products, that sounds so vain, but it’s so true I would look like a crazy person without them. Haha! I also wouldn’t be able to live without something to read or some type of knowledge to absorb. I love learning.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years:

In 3 years, I see myself married with at least one child. I want to start a family, as scary as it seems. I also see myself in less debt in 3 years and either finishing or already having a master’s degree.

Single or taken:

I am in a relationship.

How many tattoos do you have:

I have 6 tattoos! I have 2 really large pieces and 4 smaller ones. My favorite is the one on my leg, it covers the majority of my right thigh. It is a pin-up girl with a sugar skull face and traditional roses surrounding her. It’s my most favorite tattoo, the older I get the more I love it.

Name a Song you like and Artist:

A song I currently can’t stop playing is “A Lot” by 21 Savage Ft. J. Cole. I love the beat and anything J. Cole features on is always pretty dope. I enjoy all kinds of different music though, some days I feel like rocking out, some days it’s oldies, reggae & dancehall, even some country. I keep it pretty well-rounded musically, just depends on my mood.

Name a movie you like:

I love scary movies and thrillers a lot. Otherwise, I love kid movies, Rio and Lilo & Stitch will never get old to me.

What do you like to do for fun:

For fun I like to paint, clean, hike and exercise.

Where can we find you online:

You can find me on Instagram, @SundayCurls.

What’s next for you:

I intend on creating more content and art and advocating for mental health as much as possible.
