“My artistic passion for painting started when I was in my first year at college. I was always going to major in art (drawing at the time), but paint seemed so intimidating to me.” – M. O.
What do you do & what inspires you to do it:
Oil, watercolor, and ink paintings, as well as murals. I also work in other creative mediums like sculpture and textiles. I’m inspired by nature, the body, mind, and soul.
How do you define success:
Success is doing what you love. Financial success means nothing if you are miserable.
What would you say to motivate a younger you to be successful in life:
When you doubt yourself, push through it. The nature of being an artist is always questioning things, and that includes questioning yourself. It’s an important part of the process. Don’t let doubt get in the way of your creativity.
Take advantage of the time you have now, because you won’t always have the luxury of doing things just for yourself.
Are you doing now what you’ve always wanted to do or did you have other aspirations previously:
I have been drawing or painting since I was a young child. Being an artist is exactly what I’ve always wanted to be. No question! I don’t have as much time as I used to, to devote to painting now that I am a mother, but I do the best with the time I have.
What’s the best business or personal advice you’ve ever received:
From a fellow artist – Go into your studio every day. Even if you don’t feel like painting, just go into your creative space and see what happens.
From my mom – be your own advocate.
From my dad – be thorough when entering any new business venture. Do your research. Don’t go into anything blindly.
What’s something people would be surprised to know about you:
I don’t watch a lot of TV, but my guilty pleasure is the reality show The Bachelor.
Do you believe in a higher power:
What’s something you can’t live without:
Where do you see yourself in 3 years:
Hopefully defining my artistic direction even more than it is now. I’m always striving to dive deeper into what it is I am trying to say with my work. And trying to keep up with my children.
I have two callings in my life so far, to be an artist and to be a mother.
