Drty One of the Day – Lyra Jay

Lyra Jay.

What do you do and what inspires you to do it:

I write pop songs, and then sing them. I’m inspired by a lot of things! Cool sounds, messages that I want to convey, melodies that I like, real life situations. But mostly the connection to my inner self when I sit at a piano and write.

It’s so raw, sometimes it’s really confronting, other times it’s silly and fun. It’s a fast way to magnify what you’re really feeling, and then when that resonates with someone else, it pushes you to do more and do better.

How do you define success:

Doing what you love! This industry is so harsh, and it keeps changing the goalpost. ‘You’re successful if you’ve recorded some songs,’ ‘You’re successful if you’re selling music,’ ‘You’re successful if you’ve sold 100,000 copies,’ ‘You’re successful if you’ve won a Grammy’. Screw that! You’re successful if what you do makes you smile.

What would you say to motivate a younger you to be successful in life:

Stop seeking validation from people who don’t respect you and surround yourself with people who encourage you. Do not be afraid to ask for help; wolves hunt in packs.

Name a song you like and the artist:

Buy Me Diamonds by Bea Miller is my current get-ready-to-party song. I can’t help but dance to the chorus!

Name a movie you like:

Netflix’ A Christmas Prince… Kidding. My number 1 movie will always be the original Annie – the girl literally sings herself into getting adopted and Carol Burnett is a Queen.

What do you like to do for fun:

I’m in a low-key relationship with Jack Daniels, sometimes we go to karaoke and we force my friends to do Disney duets with me, which they love. I also love to travel and look at fishies and sharks underwater with some scuba gear on. To clarify, I’m the one in the scuba gear.
