In today’s Dirty South Club spotlight, we give a little bit of shine and love to artist, singer, and songwriter Anna Stockdale.
What’s your name and where you’re from:
I’m Anna Stockdale, I’m originally from Aledo, Texas, but I now live in Nacogdoches, Texas with my husband.
What do you do and what inspired you to do it:
I’m a singer/songwriter and I started playing guitar when I was about 8. I found my dad’s old guitar in his closet (he never really played) so I decided I wanted to teach myself to play. I never performed shows really until I spent a summer in Wyoming on a ranch working as an intern. My managers found out that I played and sang, and they volunteered me to play every Saturday night with two other people. It was one of the most fun, beneficial things I’ve ever done.
From there, I went to finish my degree at Texas A&M University (Whoop) where I had a professor, Jose Quintana, who was heavily involved in this awesome music venue, The Grand Stafford Theater in Bryan, Texas. I really credit him and the venue with giving me my start. While playing shows I met and began playing with other musicians and booking in the area.
I took a little break from music when I moved to Nacogdoches after graduation. I worked as a car salesman for a year and a half then my husband and I decided we both wanted to follow our passions and The Lord has blessed us both with the opportunity to do that. So, I quit my job back in April and now am pursuing music full-time.
The best part about performing for me is meeting people at shows, just visiting or hearing how they can relate to the songs I’ve written. Music is to me the most powerful thing that can reach a part of the soul that nothing else can. That’s why I love what I do.
How do you define success:
At risk of sounding cheesy, I’d say success is kind of what you make it. For me, I just want to have a full schedule with my music, to be able to live off of it. That would allow me to, yes, be successful in music, but also have more time with my husband, and to also have more time to invest in friends and family. Having success in music is really about being able to enjoy life to the fullest.
What do you like to do for fun:
I love to travel with my husband, road trips, or to other states and countries – it’s always an adventure. I, of course, also love listening to live music and hearing other singer/songwriters share their stories.
What do you love most about the Dirty South:
My favorite thing about the South is the hospitality. It’s called “Southern Hospitality” for a reason. We have the kindest, most generous, sincerely friendly people in the country (especially here in Texas). I’m so blessed to have grown up in such a place as the South!
