Meet Sonja Norwood, our first spotlight for 2017 and also the HBIC (Head Baker in Charge) of Wick’d Confections Candle Company. Read on as she goes behind the ingredients of her creative confections candle business, shares some motivating wisdom and what she loves about the Dirty South!
What’s your name and where are you from:
My name is Sonja Norwood, I am from Houston, Texas.
What do you do and what inspired you to do it:
I am a maker of small batch luxury candles and body care. I have been an artist and creator all my life. However, when I went to college I discovered my love for science and double majored in Biology and Art. I never wanted to pursue a career in art because I found myself greatly attached to my paintings and drawings. But I take that artistry and my science background and put that into my products. I take great joy in the delight it brings to my clients.
Tell us a little bit about your company/products:
I began my company while I was 8 months pregnant with my second child. I was in my science classroom brainstorming craft stations for our holiday celebration and thought a festive pillar candle would be nice for my students to make. From that point on I began to make candles which evolved into handcrafting candles that mimicked the look and aroma of cupcakes and then soaps.
Where do you find inspiration for your scents and products:
I find my inspiration from fragrances that I like and classic combinations that most people find appealing. My imagination is often sparked by looking at the work of pastry chefs.
Best business or personal advice you’ve ever received:
No one cares about your business the way you do.
Any words of advice or encouragement for those who wish to follow in your footsteps:
Find your passion, be an original. If you are passionate about what you are doing you will find joy in doing your best work.
How do you define success:
Success is being able to make a living and provide for your family while doing what you love.
What are your plans or goals for your company in the near future:
My goal is to begin stocking my products in stores and also to begin shipping internationally. I also would like to run a few workshops.
What do you like to do for fun:
I enjoy beauty and like to create beautiful things.
What do you love most about the Dirty South:
The relaxed pace and kind nature of the people, and our big portion sizes. LOL
