In today’s Dirty South Club spotlight, we give some shine to author Brittney Pressley. I was impressed with Brittney’s grind-game from my first time encountering her. The creativity used to promote her books, the grind and her realness were just a few factors in making her a part of the Dirty South Club family.
The entrepreneur took some time to share with us what inspires her to write, details on her upcoming book and of course what she loves about the Dirty South!
What’s your name and where are you from:
Brittney Pressley and I’m from Hamden, CT (Live in VA).
What do you do and what inspired you to do it:
‘Loving Inward, Living Outward, Looking Forward’ and ‘Open Your Mind Before You Open Your Legs’ are my first two books. I’m inspired by truth and authenticity — two things that are missing in business, personal relationships, casual interactions, media, etc. And ironically, two things that I’ve always been criticized for my whole life. I feel that the only way to live the best life you can live is to exist as the rawest version of who you are. So, writing the books (and writing in general) helps me to encourage others to peel back their layers and settle into the comfort of who they actually are but it also helps me to do the same.
Best business or personal advice you’ve ever received:
It’s hard to narrow down the best advice I’ve received because a lot of it impacts me differently but I’ll say to never compromise my truth for anyone. Sounds simple but it works in business, in love, in creativity, etc. Sometimes we can get caught up with altering our truth or how we say something or how we present information based off of the reaction we receive from other people. This happened to me a lot growing up where teachers would tell me that I was “too challenging” or “too disruptive” because I was able to think for myself and ask questions when instructions didn’t make sense to me. Without knowing and over time, people can contribute to you thinking that there’s something wrong with you because they don’t understand the way you operate or process; or maybe they feel threatened by you and transfer that energy to you, but I’ve learned to never compromise who I am in order to make anyone comfortable.
Biggest fear or scare in your life you overcame or wish to overcome:
To be honest I don’t live with fear because I think it’s counterproductive. I do hope that I’m able to impact and be of service to all of the people that I’m intended to connect with.
Any words of advice or encouragement for those who wish to follow in your footsteps:
My advice would be to not follow in my footsteps but to follow in your own. I’m leaving a blueprint of how I maneuver through being an Author on social media, interviews, etc., so anyone can pull whatever information they want from there and use it as a part of their journey. Many people say to me, “I’ve always wanted to write a book but I don’t know where to start”; then they usually want me to tell them every step of the process. I always encourage them to start writing though because it doesn’t matter how much of the process you are familiar with if you have no content.
What’s next for you or what are you working on that we can look out for:
I have a new book coming which will be a spinoff of ‘Open Your Mind Before You Open Your Legs’, which is geared towards women. The next book will be the same concept but geared towards men; it’s a conversation that I’ve wanted to have with men for a very long time and I recently felt inspired to write it.
What do you like to do for fun:
Long walks on the beach — just kidding! I enjoy going to wineries, hanging out with my little cousins at the arcade or whatever they wanna do, traveling to anywhere warm, all things family and friends. It’s hard to list everything but I try to enjoy present moments as much as I can because life as an entrepreneur can get very busy, confusing and dark.
What do you love most about the Dirty South:
Shrimp and grits and warm weather 🙂
